Camera Crew Fundamentals

Late August. Four hours, a real camera package, and your hands on it the whole time. Not a lecture about the camera team. A day inside it.

Late August 2026. Exact date and location to be announced. A CCC workshop, hands-on, run by working camera crew.

You can read about the camera department for years and still freeze the first time someone hands you a build. This is the day you stop reading.

Four hours, split into two blocks with an hour to breathe in the middle. First you build the camera. Then you run it. In between, you find out how the department actually works when the AD is calling for a turnaround and the operator needs the lens swapped five minutes ago.

Block one: build it

We start with the honest version of how a camera department runs on set. Who does what. Where you fit. What an AC is actually responsible for, and what separates the ones who get the call back from the ones who do not.

Then we open the case. A live camera-package assembly, start to finish, so you see the logic of the build before you ever touch it. How the system fits together. Why the pack goes the way it goes. The right method, learned properly, before bad habits set in.

A full camera package laid out for the build

From there into the 1st AC world: the focus system, pulling focus, the communication that holds a take together, and the mental model every good focus puller runs on. Always one step ahead. The operator’s right hand.

Then it is your turn. You go in pairs or small groups, two or three to a camera, and you assemble it and make it work. You finish, you swap, someone else goes. Live feedback the whole way. Small groups on purpose. Nobody hangs at the back watching.

Block two: run it

After the break, we operate. Tripod, handheld, shoulder rig, slider. How each one feels, where each one earns its place, what your body has to do to keep a frame steady.

Operating a rigged camera

Then the closest thing to a real set we can build in a room. A simple shot, a moving subject, a camera move, focus to ride. We run it like the real thing. Rolling. Cut. Notes. Go again. You will feel the difference between knowing the theory and holding the shot while it is happening.

Real talk, then we wrap

We close with the part nobody puts in a tutorial. How people actually break into camera work down here. What gets you hired, what gets you quietly dropped, what a 1st AC wishes someone had told them on day one. Open Q&A, no polished answers. Then a group photo and out.

You will leave knowing how to build a camera package, the fundamentals of pulling focus, how to operate across four setups, and a clear, honest read on how to get into the camera department for real.

Save the date

Late August. Spaces are limited, the small-group format is the whole point, and seats go fast. The exact date, the location, and the sign-up link drop on the CCC WeChat Official Account and our Xiaohongshu (小红书).

Follow both to grab a spot before it fills.
