The Lesson Was Short. The Conversation Wasn’t.

On Friday, September 25, around 15 filmmakers and creatives gathered at The A Frame for CCC Guangzhou’s Filmmaking 101 session with Tim Ramak.

Tim kept the lesson tight. In half an hour, he worked through the fundamentals of finding a story, directing attention through the frame, and shaping the result in the edit. Then he opened the floor.

That’s where the evening really found its rhythm.

Questions turned into a proper room-wide conversation about storytelling, creative choices and the work people were making. It felt less like a lecture and more like filmmakers talking honestly around the same table. Warm, close and easy to join.

A big thank you to Tim for putting the session together, and to everyone who came ready to listen, ask questions and share what they knew.

Inside the Lesson

Tim looked at the choices that turn an idea into a story an audience can follow and feel:

  • Find the story. Who are we following, what do they want, and why should we care?
  • Tell it through the frame. Use composition, light, props, and sound to guide attention and build feeling.
  • Shape it in the edit. Decide what to reveal, what to hold, and what to cut.

The practical framework gave the room a common starting point before the session opened into questions and a wider conversation about applying those choices to real projects.

About Tim Ramak

Tim Ramak is an Australian filmmaker and self-taught creator based in Shenzhen. Over the past 10 years, he has developed his filmmaking through hands-on shooting, experimentation, and personal projects.

He enjoys breaking down what he’s learned and sharing practical approaches with other developing filmmakers.

The Evening

The gathering ran from 6 to 9 PM. Tim’s 30-minute storytelling lesson moved directly into questions and an engaged group discussion, with time around the session to meet people, swap ideas and keep the conversation going.

The evening was English-speaking and brought international and local creatives together in the same room.

The Projector Started Something

Getting the projector working did more than put Tim’s lesson on the wall. It gave us an idea.

CCC Guangzhou movie nights are now in the works. A chance to watch films together, then stay in the room and talk about what worked, what didn’t, and how the thing was made.

The next Guangzhou gathering will put that idea to the test.

Next Up: A Halloween Double Bill

The upcoming Halloween gathering is shaping up as a two-part night. We’ll begin with a CCC Spotlight guest, then anyone who wants to stay can settle in for a Halloween movie with the group.

Come for the conversation. Stay for the film. Ideally, do both.

We’ll share the date, Spotlight guest, film and full event details soon on the CCC website and in the Guangzhou WeChat group.
