That’s a Wrap on Our First Shenzhen Workshop
Our first CCC Shenzhen mini workshop is officially in the books.
Around 11 filmmakers and creatives came out to Sea World for an afternoon with Tim Ramak, talking through the filmmaking process from the first idea all the way through shooting, sound, editing, and actually finishing the work.
For something we’re only just starting to build in Shenzhen, it was a really encouraging afternoon. Good questions, lots of conversation, a few new faces joining the community, and people sticking around afterwards to talk shop and get to know each other.
A massive thank you to Tim for taking the time to put the workshop together and share what he’s learned over the years, and of course to everyone who came out and helped make the first one happen.
What We Explored
Filmmaking has never been more accessible. Most of us already carry a camera in our pocket. The tools for shooting, editing, and sharing work are easier to access than ever.
But having the tools and knowing how to tell a story with them are two very different things.
This workshop wasn’t about memorising camera settings or chasing the latest gear. It was about seeing filmmaking as a complete creative process and understanding how story, composition, lighting, sound, editing, and creative choices work together to shape what an audience sees and, more importantly, what they feel.
Tim took us through the filmmaking process from the first idea to the finished piece:
THINK → PLAN → SHOOT → SHAPE → SHARE → REPEAT
We looked at how filmmakers:
- Develop an idea and decide what matters in a scene
- Plan before pressing record
- Use composition and lighting to guide an audience
- Treat sound as part of the story
- Shape the final piece in the edit
We also got into the traps that catch many new filmmakers: focusing too heavily on equipment, starting project after project without finishing one, and shooting plenty without stopping to ask what the scene is meant to say.
The goal was simple: leave with a clearer understanding of the whole process and a better sense of where to take your own filmmaking next. Professional equipment and years of experience weren’t required; the workshop was for anyone making videos, thinking about making videos, or wanting to understand what happens beyond pressing record.
About Tim Ramak
Tim Ramak is an Australian filmmaker, self-taught creator, and aspiring YouTuber based in Shenzhen.
Over the past 10 years, he has studied and practised filmmaking independently, developing his skills through hands-on shooting, experimentation, and personal projects.
Passionate about storytelling, coffee, travel, and visual creativity, Tim enjoys breaking down what he has learned and sharing practical approaches with other developing filmmakers.
Workshop Format
The main workshop ran for approximately 90 minutes, followed by an open Q&A, discussion, and networking session.

This also isn’t the end of Filmmaking 101. On Friday, September 25, Tim will bring the workshop to Axle Studio in Guangzhou, giving the Guangzhou CCC crowd a chance to join the conversation and dig into the same ideas around story, composition, lighting, sound, and the filmmaking process. Meanwhile, the Shenzhen workshop series will continue as well. We’re working on the next one, with September currently looking likely for a deeper step into the world of documentary filmmaking. More on both very soon.
